Kawthaung

It represents what the Southern Myanmar has to offer. It has many beautiful islands with amazing beaches and few interesting places to visit. However,          it has to be mentioned that is the most dystans South destination from Yangon  you can go. In fact it easier to get there by a very popular border crossing with Thailand on the very short boat trip.

During British rule in Burma between 1824 and 1948, it was known as Victoria Point. The majority of Kawthaung’s population is made up of Bamar, Thai and  Sea Gypsies. Because of the colonial past, Myanmar decades of economic isolation and close distance to touristic Thailand, it makes Kawthaung very interesting mixture, worth to visit. It might be actually your entry point to Myanmar and your the first impression of the country.

How can you get there

Charter boat from the docks at Yangon is a common way to enter Kawthoung and has been used by travelers in Thailand looking for to extend their visa-free stays in Thailand. Travel agents in Yangon can arrange this for around 400 baht per person.  Traveling from Yangon on the bus it might take you few days  and you perhaps might stop in Dawei or Myiek to change the bus. What to see

 

The town it might not be very interesting and beauitluff but there are few things to see. Downtown pagoda chart Pyi Daw Aye Pagoda . The temple is a hit with locals and the main entrance. The pagoda itself, apart the large gold painted chedi, is noteworthy for the huge boddhi tree surrounded by eight shrines corresponding to the days of the week. Mey Paw Kyan- situated on the hill pagoda which  views the all tawn and back across the estuary towards Thailand. Maliwan Waterfall-clean and very relaxing spot outside of the town, where you can hire inner tubes or kayaks, use a water slide or simply splash around in the clean pool and 10 kilometres further north are the Maliwan hot springs.  

Islands 

 

Palane Tone Tone island, five kilometers and connected by the wooden bridge  to the north of Kawthaung. The east side of the island is made up of mangroves and vast sand banks and on the west side you will find a pleasant sandy beach, lined with a number of simple seafood restaurants and beer stations. Myauk Ni and Salone Islands– In the close distance to the town, there are Kayin Kwa and other such as Myauk Ni and Salone Islands, a part of Mergui Archipelago. They are good places for diving and other sea activities since the place can still be regarded as virgin and undisturbed. There is an option of taking a  speedboats, English-speaking staff and equipment, and offer occasional day trips taking in Nyaung Oo Phee Island,where they are opening their new beach resort with morning and afternoon snorkeling sessions.
